A closer look at Freebirds

Freebirds World Burrito, known for producing a seven-pound burrito, is scheduled to open its second Orange County restaurant in March.

The first Orange County Freebirds, whose assembly-line order system resembles Chipotle Mexican Grill and Café Rio, opened last year in Orange.  The second one is opening March 6 in Huntington Beach, according to the chain’s website.  (Address: 18541 Beach Blvd.)

The first funky Freebirds opened in the UC Santa Barbara party town of Isla Vista in 1987 – six years before Chipotle conquered the world with its foil-wrapped burritos. Its new owner, Tavistock Restaurants in Emeryville, Ca., has been expanding the concept in the West Coast.

As guests order, they are partnered with a team member called a “roller,” who helps them choose from four sizes of burritos.  Customers can choose a selection of more than 40 ingredients. Burritos range in size from the Hybird  to the Super Monster. Prices also vary depending on the ingredients you choose.

At the Orange store, for example, the lowest-priced burrito is a $5 veggie; the highest is $13.79 for a Super Monster steak burrito. Stuffed to the maximum, the legendary Super Monster can weigh up to seven pounds.

The chain also sells nachos, tacos and salads.
